Re: Pokemon game discussion
it is my in-game team, but i don't use it strictly for competitive battle, just to beat smug nerds in the lunchroom and put them in their place
in other news, i think i might use aegislash on that last slot just because it's so damn good and it has important immunities. i'll just have to rearrange some stuff

Re: Pokemon game discussion
Yeah, It's a great setup sweeper. That said:
- Possible Psychic Gym leader team:
- Name: Gym Leader OJ (maybe Jay instead, not sure yet)
City: Fable Town (Mystic Gym) (maybe 5th or 6th gym?)
Team (around level 30): Kadabra, Xatu, Baltoy, Bronzor, Sigilyph
Rematch Team (Level 65 or more maybe?): Alakazam, Xatu, Claydol, Bronzong, Sygilyph
(I'm not sure how rematches exactly work to be honest...)
Badge: Tale Badge
TM: TM 29 (Psychic)
OJ is fairly well known in the city. He is usually a fairly likable guy, though he tends to be a bit forgetful at times. He is rather calm and helpful and knows the people of Fable Town well. His main problem besides his forgetfulness is the fact that he seems to be tired most of the time, as if he didn't get enough sleep. This can even go so far that he can fall asleep while he is doing something or even while talking. He often wakes up moments later and apologizes about it.
Alongside the Pokemon Gym, OJ runs a small town library, which contains many mythological stories from all around the world. He personally prefers to work alone though, usually only surounding himself with a few trusted trainers and his psychic Pokemons.
When OJ isn't busy with his gym, he spends time researching various myths and collecting books and scrolls for the library. There are some rumors that he is doing something else when he is on his own but most towns people find this rumor rather silly.
The town itself is rather small and most of the people are rather old. However, they are well known that they still specialize in some old forgotten arts. One example of this is the shop for herbal medizine in the town. There is also a man who supposedly can create Pokeball-like devices from apricorns in this town, though most people prefer to buy those only as a souvenir nowadays.
OJ is usually seen with his Kadabra, Zauber, who was his first ever Pokemon. Zauber seems to keep and eye on OJ, especially when he fell asleep again. If asked, locals will say that they heard that OJ and Zauber used to meditate together back when Zauber was just a little Abra.
I have move sets for these Pokemons as well, if anyone cares. and obviously, if I were to play the role of a villain, too, I'd use a different team.

Re: Pokemon game discussion
Generally speaking, the first match battle has 3 or 4 Pokemon (I went for 4 because it's slightly more) and then the rematch has a full party of 6.
I like the backstory though, I love reading those things. Gym leaders should be proper community members, not just strong trainers sitting in a gym.

Re: Pokemon game discussion
I figured that a larger team could make up for the lower level, which is why I said the fifth or sixth gym.
Also, if you like to read stuff, I can give more information about OJ (Or just Jay) as both a gym leader as well as a villain.
Also, when do the rematches happen, after the elite four, right?

Re: Pokemon game discussion
Okay FINE I'll do the thing, I'll make it hapen or whatever
Besides I totally have a job I can do
Besides I totally have a job I can do
- Spoiler:
Title:
TOWER DUDE Eoin
Residence:
Some tower, any tower for the moment, preferably low rent, prob'ly post-game
Team
(on 20 consecutive wins, Singles): Swampert, Scizor, Dragalge; random order
(On 50 consecutive wins, Super Singles): Scizor, Reuniclus, Mega Absol; random order
(Outside of working hours: Saturdays in a cafe somewhere)
Scizor, Reuniclus, Dragalge, Swampert, Mega Absol, Eelektross; all level 72
It's hard to place Eoin as a TOWER DUDE. His youthful energy is nowhere to be found, and so is he. The damn guy won't sit still. He's is all over the place, often lazing in some cafe somewhere, nursing a bottle of soda pop. It's probably the same bottle of soda pop. He is that lazy. If you challenge him, he'll likely say 'maybe later k?', but don't believe him because if you show up in the same cafe later he'll think you're a stalker, you stalker. I bet you have a document listing all of the Kanto and Johto leader's weekly timetables somewhere, haven't you? What. A. Weirdo. In truth, he does not like trifles. Buy him a donut instead.
Anyway, the best way to grab his attention is to preemptively laze around in a cafe before he arrives. He'll get suspicious and challenge you to a battle, rewarding you with a weekly promise of rematches and also a PP Max should you win. He uses PP Max because he's too lazy to use 3 PP ups. Seriously, I cannot describe how lazy the Tower Dude is.
Captain is also constantly making things. He likes to keep his hands and mind busy, and creates all sorts of items, ranging from highly complex and large structures to small pocket toys, all which are then sold in Bibrick's Trinket shop. He frequently visits the shop and acts as the store clerk whilst there.
The town is also host to the Art of War studios, where a group of people and Pokemon create battle plays in which they perform warrior dances, which involve showing off disciplined warrior technique in often rather dangerous ways. It is an extremely thrilling thing to watch. This was also entirely set up and is run by Captain, although he never performs himself in the routines.
Finally, Bibrick town also hosts a yearly writers's fair, where storytellers all gather round and tell stories of their own creation around a large bonfire at night. The winner gets prizes of various sorts. Once again, the contest was made and is run entirely by Captain.
Captain is never seen without his Combusken, Olympus, who was his first ever Pokemon. Wherever Captain goes, Olympus follows. Olympus is not just a travelling companion though and is also rather strong in battle, having won gym challenges for Captain many times in the past.

Hahahahahaha, Eoin, best story ever. Especially the last few paragraphs.
But for real, I was expecting more breeding.
Just for the sake of fun, I might write what kind of GL I would be. But later.
Smell ya later

Re: Pokemon game discussion
I themed all my teams around weather until X and Y, haha.
Kyogre/Kingdra/Kabutops/Omastar/Starmie/Ludicolo kicked so much butt, but now I'm just going Dark/Psychic.
(It's like Malamar was made specifically for me, man
Inversion AND squid AND Dark-type? Count me innnnn)

Re: Pokemon game discussion
Hence the emphasis on 'lazy'. No slight was intendedCaptain wrote:Dude if you're gonna Copy paste my shit at least do a better job of it...
Just to be clear, I can write pretty well when I want to and I'm not actually lazy (though my priorities are a little skewed). I just thought it'd be a fun character thing.
Also SNAP my gen 5 teams were a vanilla Sun and medium Rain team. But it was only to counter other weather really. GOD I am glad the 5th gen meta is over. It /sucked/.
BTW I started breeding that Absol I got today, after about 12:00 noon. I finished at 9 with an end result of:
Sierrer (Absol, Male)
Naive, Justified
-Rough Play
31/31/31/28/31/31
Dem stats. With a decent breeding base and parents that don't hate each other, the new breeding mechanics are almost... Broken? None of it is any simpler than it used to be, it's just faster and gives way better results :/

Re: Pokemon game discussion
I dunno, I kind of like the reduced grind.
Breeding and EV training Pokemon has always been suuuuuuuper grueling if you want to get halfway decent Pokemon, and I honestly prefer the reduced time biking back and forth in front of the Day-Care and fighting the same low-level Pokemon over and over.
There's a lot of nostalgia in the really steep grind, but I think there's a lot of pointlessness in it too.

Re: Pokemon game discussion
Oh no, I agree. I hate the idea of having to breed back in gen 5 now (alas, move tutors... Had the same problem with Black and White, couldn't move my pokemon from silver up until I was certain I wouldn't need them for breeding/bp farming.). It's just WEIRD seeing stats like that and knowing they're the standard now...
...I think what bothers me is, while breeding great pokemon just got easier and faster, it didn't get any less complicated (and statistically it got MORE complicated). So I'm conscious that for those that didn't want to couldn't grasp the minutiae of breeding last gen, there pokemon will be even further from the standard an accomplished breeder's pokemon sets. It's an increasing power divide I guess between competitives and casuals. Super training helps, though.

Re: Pokemon game discussion
It's the random aspect of it. The destiny knot IS superior in the general sense, but you can't rely on it. Before, you equip a power item and remove a variable from the passing. Now, everything is a variable: you chuck two pokemon together with wildly different IVs, give one a knot, then cross your fingers, hope, and put on the bike shorts. It's totally wild.
But the results are better, so...

A single Destiny Knot randomly selects five stats from EITHER parent and mashes 'em together in the baby, no matter which parent is holding the Knot. Dunno why you'd need two Knots?

Re: Pokemon game discussion
I tried it but it seems that one overrides the other (I'm not sure which). It would be great though if the power item passed one stat and the destiny knot had to choose from the other 5. Then 50% of the whismirs from my final stage could've had flawless IVs. But alas, it didn't turn out that way.cephalopodAscendant wrote:Does anyone know if you can use the Power items in conjunction with the Destiny Knot, or is it an either/or thing?
