I think that it would be the "first term" if i started at 0 (a = 6^0 = 1) for that particular formula; at least that's what I've seen... Though admittedly it's been a while since I've series'd so I might be totally incorrect here.

a is the first term so set it so that it is a times something equal to one so you get 36\sum_{i=0}^{n-1} 6^i then you can plug into a(r^n-1)/(r-1) and like magic you get it

No, like magic YOU get it. I still don't get it, shlow down pleashe. I thought a was the first term in the series, in this case 6^2 since sigma (i) starts at two? That gets the 36 but after that I'm lost. Though it might just be I'm not sure about your notation.

if you are adding 6^i from i=2 to i=n+1 that is the same as adding 36*6^i from i=0 to i=n-1 then you can use the formula for geometric series because that only works for i=0 being the start

Oh. Okay, so what you're saying is I can rewrite the series in terms of something that I can actually use, going from the 2 to n+1 sum of 6^i and changing it to one going from 0 to n-1. Okay yeah that makes sense. Question though, what math do you have to do to change

S = 6^2 + 6^3 + 6^4 ... + 6^n + 6^n+1

Into something more like

S' = ...^0 + ...^1 + ....... + ...^n-1? (Presumably 6^ but I dunno) I don't see how multiplying the terms by 6^2 solves anything, or even how it comes about. The whole thing seems really familiar but I can't work it out.

OH WAIT 36 = 6^2, 6^2*6^i = 6^2+i, which is the offset, shit I'm losing my train of thought again... No I think I have it. You want it in terms of ^0 to ^n-1. 6^2 can be rewritten as 36*6^0, 6^3 as 36*6^1 etc. Then we can use the formula, so a is... Still 36?? And r is still 6 and n is still n okay hold on how did this help at all I still have the same variables.
Maybe I just can't simplify things very well.

Sum ar^k  =  36(6^n -1 / 6 -1)

6-1 is 5 you have 36*1/5*(6^n-1) ignoring the 36 isnt that exactly what you thought it should look like?

TBH it was multiple choice. 36/5(6^n -1) was in fact the first one. Neat! Aaaaand now I can't remember what stopped me simplifying that from the start. I had the 36 and the 5 and everything.

No I definitely have checked it out and have shared it with all of my Pokemon-playing friends

Still trying to figure out what should be on the last slot of my team.

What's your team? I have a lot of guys floating around my boxes now that bank has opened and trying to see what works is a bit of a pain. But the main thing is: Decide on team style, (presumably balanced offence) and decide how you're going to handle hazards, e.g rapid spin/setter, rapid spin AND a setter, defog, defog + hazards, multiple hazards, suicide lead, spinblocker, magic bounce etc.

Everything's still in limbo, honestly (including movesets) but generally it's looking like

- Breloom (Technician @ Life Orb) -- might want to change the item since she keeps dying :U
- Metagross (Clear Body @ Lum Berry) -- a leftover from last gen; I'm going to try out Bullet Punch against fairies and perhaps EQ again?
- Alakazam (not sure if should mega)
- Greninja (Protean @ Expert Belt) -- Hydro Pump, Ice Beam, U-Turn, Dark Pulse
- Victini (Victory Star @ Life Orb) -- another vestige of my old monopsychic team that worked pretty well.

So there's that last slot left but I also kind of want to try another monopsychic team again at some point... I usually just have a bunch of Pokes that hit hard and then hope for the best. Metagross is the one (very) slightly tanky Poke I have around.

I also have to admit that I started playing League so maybe I've been neglecting pruning my team? :U
