Re: Pokemon game discussion
i'm not really hugely into the competitive scene, just want to beat friends at school, namely the ones who use ubers on their team and don't even feel guilty about it
but yeah, now that i think about it, i think i'll try to find some alternative to garchomp. definitely keeping mega pinsir though because god dammit it looks cool and it gets really powerful and fast enough to sweep like a madman, plus flying-type thrash is nothing to scoff at

Re: Pokemon game discussion
Ubers, eh? Fairy fairy fairy. Xerneas is almost too uber for ubers. Togekiss counters Garchomp nicely, too. And you can't switch a blaziken into it. Not sure how well it does versus MGengar though, but Togekiss has a lot of pivot-y friends it can make use of.
In fact the general consensus is that Togekiss will be the games best fairy type... Bar Xerneas of course. It beats out MGardevoir by miles, is more reliable than Azumarill, laughs at Sylveon and Florges and doesn't take up MMawile's mega slot.

Re: Pokemon game discussion
ooh i almost forgot about mega mawile
the problem is that mawile is fairly useless without being mega, so it's not something i'd risk using in my team if there are other megas i'd want to use, and goddammit nobody's gonna separate me from mega pinsir
i think togekiss sounds like a good option and probably what i'm gonna go with. but then i should probably switch out skarmory for some ground types, just so i'm not completely vulnerable to electricity. maybe steelix?

Re: Pokemon game discussion
Be careful there. Garchomp is faster than Togekiss and usually runs Stone Edge. It won't one-shot you, but if you switch in on what you think is an EQ/Outrage or have already taken some damage it won't work out too well.d_what wrote:Ubers, eh? Fairy fairy fairy. Or if he's used Swords Dance. Then you have to pray for 20% miss chance.
Togekiss is pretty bulky though.

Re: Pokemon game discussion
Usually? I think you'll find he 'usually' doesn't. It's generally redundant coverage. In gen 5 it's usually only a choice scarf one, and scarfers are usually revenge killers: if someone sends it in after your Togekiss, youl'll know it runs it and can switch appropriately, gaining a free turn if you predict the right move. Meanwhile Togekiss is a free switch in 90%+ of the time to an already choice-locked Garchomp. 'Course, more of them will run Stone Edge now that Togekiss is actually good, which... Is still good for Togekiss since it reduces Garchomp's overall effectiveness. 4MSS, see? It's a very clever nerf, actually. Stone Edge is the only thing GChomp can run that doesn't make Togekiss an absolute 100% counter. I think that's pretty cool.
The same applies to many other dragons (had there been more good ones. It's weird, GF gave them great moves and hardly any great Pokemon. I was expecting the total opposite, Fairy pokemon deluge and low base power moves). OJ said previously they all can learn steel or poison coverage moves - though that won't help with Mawile - but running them makes them easier for the rest of the team to handle. Unfortunately I don't think Dragons will change the way they're running. There's just not enough fairies to go around. MGarde and MMaw take up a mega slot and, while tough, have well defined counters. Klefki can't do anything to dragons really, it's non offensive at its best. Dedenne. Hehehe. Clefable may see use. I hope it does. Granbull's too slow. Azumarill will of course see use but it's countered the same way it was last gen (though did you know it can have belly drum and aqua jet on the same team now?? Terrifying!). Togekiss, as before. Regular Gardevoir may or may not be usable... Mr.Mime won't. Florges and Sylveon just can't do anything useful BESIDES being fairy type (and passing wishes. Better left to Togekiss/Blissey/Vaporeon though). It's an odd situation. Shame Mismagius or Milotic didn't get it, Mismagius would have been a fun revenge killer or set up sweeper with sticky web support and Milotic could be the counterpart to Azumarill's sweeper - and can run a pretty cool RestTalk set, too. (Does Marvel Scale increase defense while asleep? That's pretty awesome with Milotic's sp.def. And you can't toxic it because Rest overwrites it )
Note: message didn't send this morning so this whole train of thought could be outdated!

Re: Pokemon game discussion
I think you're forgetting that both Sylveon and Florges have a pretty great Special Attack here dude. Florges is brilliant because it can dish out a lot of pain with Moonblast/Petal Dance, but also act as a useful support. It can effectively keep itself alive too with Wish. Use wish one turn, use Moonblast the next. Of course, it is very average on Speed and it fears physical attackers (especially Steel and Poisons- run away from Crobats and Scizors for sure), but every Pokemon has things it simply cannot face. I think Florges will definitely get some usage at least in UU. Sylveon will too, because Dual Screens and a decent amount of coverage with Psyshock and Shadow Ball is pretty decent. Not to mention 150 power Fairy move with Pixilate.
So yeah, I hardly feel like fairies won't get used much. Granted, we really need a good physically defensive Fairy, that would shoot to OU if its movepool and other stats were good enough, but I hardly think that there won't be SOME fairies in the higher tiers of usage.

Re: Pokemon game discussion
They both have great special stats. Which is a shame really because they're both in heavy competition with each other. Main problem is their movepools; Florges by niche alone can't handle Special walls but also can't handle physical Steel walls, barring certain Hidden Powers. And... A lot of physical walls are steel and can retaliate either super effectively, on it's VERY shaky physical side, or both. And it doesn't have the HP or speed (either or) to really support the team via wish. Sylveon fares slightly better with Shadow Ball, though that coverage isn't brilliant either - even without a megastone Gengar is going to blow holes this gen. And I hope that 150bp move isn't hyper beam...It's also in competition with Blissey, Vaporeon, Togekiss, Clefable... All of whom can offer an awful lot more. And both of their abilities offer no saving grace, either. (Though HA Florges looks pretty neat in doubles!)
I can see then working great in UU. Assuming this gen's UU isn't akin to last gen's OU, which is a possibility. Especially since it happened to 4th gen's OU...
Tl;Dr: even if a pokemon has something that can take it down, having 'options' keeps it relevant, for example at least doing something significant on the switch, or even THREATENING something on the switch. Not only do Florges and Sylveom have a lot of counters they can't do anything to, their existence on a team gives all of those very dangerous Pokemon an unhindered opportunity to do some very, very dangerous things.

Re: Pokemon game discussion
My berry fields look interesting. I have one plot per EV reducing berry. I only had 3 Kelpsy and 4 Grepa when planting them out, so the other spaces are taken up with the mutation berries of said berries, but yeah, I'm soon gonna have another useful tool. Being able to reduce only a special stat's EVs. Useful stuff, makes EV training that tiny amount shorter in the stats you want.
In other news, I finally have that Immunity Gligar! Currently Breeding Ralts.
All I need after that is Protean Froakie, and then training can commence.

Yeah I got so used to not having EV reducing berries that when I looked at all of mine I got quite a shock! I am *this* close to getting kee berries, too. Need Apicots before getting Marangas though. Or vice versa.

I'm saying that Sawk's fingers are really unnerving. They're all pointy and segmented and definitely push Sawk into the uncanny valley.

Well, I can't find any videos of either of them, so I can't say if they look weird.

I find it adorable. I think I might just have to try using one once I get that far.
(I haven't been playing much lately because I have been busy studying for a thing and also trying to finish the fourth Ace Attorney game before the new one comes out, so, um, yeah.)

Re: Pokemon game discussion
...no,
Reference to a bunch of things, likely starting with the witching hour, which fits the city's theme to a tee?? Cute design flourish though. Shame the individual cities don't have more bckstories/mysteries/sidequests. If every town had the equivalent of Lumiose's looker quest or Mauville's New Mauville, I would be a happy camper.

Re: Pokemon game discussion
if there were a sidequest for every city then you would start questioning the motives of the writers and wondering if all these quests were really necessary or if they could have put that development time into making something better. also the stories would start feeling contrived after a while, i was already feeling that way with the looker quest
Re: Pokemon game discussion
Yeah but I feel that way about the regular story anyway *shrug* I guess since I'm so convinced I won't find quality in the plot of a Pokemon game, I look for quantity instead.
And world building. Lots and lots of world building. Dammit I want to know how their economy functions, is that so wrong???

Re: Pokemon game discussion
i would totally have a great debate about this but i've learned to not even try that on the internet any more
change of topic: i've been using my mega pinsir against people at school but it keeps getting beat on the first turn by a faster pokemon. i'm thinking about replacing thrash with quick attack for priority and STAB, does this sound like a good idea? current moveset is swords dance, thrash, brick break (gonna replace with either superpower or close combat when possible) and x-scissor.

Re: Pokemon game discussion
On that not Gel, apparently Pixilate and Refrigerate boost changed moves by 30%. Aerilate hasn't been tested, but assuming it does as well MegaPinsir Quick Attack is pretty potent.
Also, Earthquake is better than CC/Superpower on Pinsir IMO.
