that's what i'm saying. it's not a hard rule. it's a general guideline that when i suggested it, i said rule and everyone now thinks i'm trying to force this thing into being.

Re: THE CHATBOX THREAD
- The meaning of art (aspiring artists, take note):
- [17:25:48] @ Gelatino : the real purpose of art isn't just about drawing stuff, or drawing people, or even drawing what you feel
[17:26:08] @ Gelatino : a lot of the time it seems like the main struggle in art is to get better, draw better pictures
[17:26:15] @ Gelatino : but art isn't really about skill either
[17:26:21] @ Gelatino : skill is just a tool of the trade
[17:26:43] @ Gelatino : more skilled artists are better at accomplishing the true purpose of art
[17:26:52] @ Gelatino : but even less skilled artists can do the same
[17:27:36] @ Gelatino : the purpose of art is to find meaning, and to illuminate it
[17:27:48] @ Gelatino : like i said, the world os rife with meaning
[17:27:55] @ Gelatino : our imaginations are rife with meaning too
[17:28:00] tailoredGoose : srry cant hear you trying to eat doughnut http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m8aatcqOG31r4xhe6o2_1280.jpg
[17:28:48] @ Gelatino : truly good art has hidden meaning behind its outer facade
[17:29:16] @ Gelatino : good art isn't just about the stuff that's drawn on the page, or written in the book
[17:29:35] tailoredGoose : http://dampho.tumblr.com/post/59131762929/leradny-videohall-astronaut-readjusts-to
[17:29:37] @ Gelatino : there's something there that the artist intended, and that the observers have to find out
[17:29:53] @ Gelatino : the best example of this is literature
[17:30:08] @ Gelatino : that's why i always encourage visual artists to try learning about literature
[17:30:20] @ Gelatino : a book isn't really just telling a story
[17:30:32] @ Gelatino : reading a book is more like solving a puzzle
[17:30:55] @ Gelatino : the puzzle pieces have been laid out by the author, and the reader gets to put them together
[17:31:24] @ Gelatino : if the reader is feeling lazy, then they could just sit back and look at the pieces without exerting the effort to put them together
[17:31:37] @ Gelatino : and maybe they're okay with that! maybe the pieces are really pretty
[17:31:57] @ Gelatino : but needless to say, if you choose to just look at the pieces instead of the bog picture, you're not getting the full experience
[17:32:24] @ Gelatino : putting together a puzzle takes a fair bit of insight and it's an entertaining challenge
[17:33:31] @ Gelatino : brb
[17:34:44] @ Gelatino : reading a book is a fun challenge too, if you choose for it to be
[17:35:11] @ Gelatino : sure, you could just read the words on the page and think about the plot, think about the characters
[17:35:33] @ Gelatino : but that's really akin to looking at the puzzle pieces without putting them together
[17:35:57] @ Gelatino : the author of a good work of fiction has laid out a lot of stuff for the reader to internalize and analyze
[17:36:17] @ Gelatino : most of the time, a work of literature has some message about life, about the human condition
[17:36:53] @ Gelatino : the characters, plot, setting, all those hokey little elements you learned about in school all contribute to this message
[17:37:01] @ Gelatino : this "theme," if you will
[17:37:19] @ Gelatino : that's a word that a lot of english students are familiar with
[17:37:40] @ Gelatino : basically, all the elements of a work of fiction work towards a common theme
[17:37:50] @ Gelatino : and it's a lot of fun when you can identify that theme
[17:38:16] @ Gelatino : when you can figure out what the author is doing with these characters, and how it connects to a bigger picture
[17:38:19] Spark Eletran joined the chat on Fri 23 Aug 2013 - 17:38
[17:38:29] @ Gelatino : that's a real intellectual challenge
[17:38:36] @ Gelatino : and that's why literature is so much fun
[17:38:56] @ Gelatino : when you put together all those literary elements, that's when you put together the puzzle and look at the amazing picture that it presents
[17:39:09] @ Gelatino : the picture that the author embedded in their work without saying it outright
[17:39:31] @ Gelatino : this isn't just true about literature
[17:39:48] @ Gelatino : all parts of that analogy work for any field of art
[17:40:02] @ Gelatino : people like to draw stuff all the time
[17:40:12] @ Gelatino : they like to draw their favorite characters from a work of fiction
[17:40:23] @ Gelatino : they like to draw characters of their own creation
[17:40:38] @ Gelatino : but that isn't always considered "good art"
[17:40:52] @ Gelatino : keep in mind that when i say "good" i really mean "interesting"
[17:41:21] @ Gelatino : a beautifully rendered picture of karkat in a turtleneck sweater only has brief impact
[17:41:47] @ Gelatino : it can't capture the awe of its observers for a significant amount
[17:42:02] @ Gelatino : sadly, we live in a society which is accustomed to easy entertainment
[17:42:15] @ Gelatino : we don't always want to see meaning in our art
[17:42:23] @ Gelatino : but that's a different discussion for a different time
[17:42:44] @ Gelatino : a truly good piece of artwork has lasting effect
[17:42:55] @ Gelatino : it makes its audience think
[17:43:18] @ Gelatino : truly good art forces its obvserver to consider the meaning behind it
[17:43:56] @ Gelatino : even if you're fucking awesome at drawing pictures of karkat, that doesn't mean you have the capacity to inspire with your work
[17:44:34] @ Gelatino : visual art is a bit of a harder medium with which to grasp hidden meaning
[17:44:39] tailoredGoose has been disconnected on Fri 23 Aug 2013 - 17:44 (session timeout)
[17:45:06] @ Gelatino : simply because people are so taken with visuals, they often don't look beyond what's given to them
[17:45:29] @ Gelatino : learning to appreciate good art requires you to engage it head-on, use your intellect to figure out what it means
[17:46:02] @ Gelatino : similarly, creating good art requires you to be aware of what common theme your elements are building towards
[17:46:34] @ Gelatino : you can just keep drawing homestuck characters all day if you want, but it won't be very interesting
[17:46:52] @ Gelatino : even if you do an amazing job of drawing, or use a really unique art style
[17:47:09] @ Gelatino : if the art isn't saying anything beyond what's on the page, it doesn't present much of a challenge
[17:47:23] @ Gelatino : nothing that i'd personally want to fawn over excessively
[17:47:49] @ Gelatino : what makes art interesting is when i have to use my imagination to figure out what it means
[17:48:09] @ Gelatino : that's the fun part of observing art, and even more fun in making it
[17:48:56] @ Gelatino : as steven king once said,
[17:49:13] @ Gelatino : "if you don't have the time to read, you don't have the time to write. simple as that."
[17:49:20] @ Gelatino : amen to that
Re: THE CHATBOX THREAD
Basically, the chatbox is a chatbox, not a thread. If you have something you want to share that not everyone will see, feel free to mention it on an actual thread, which are designed to be more permanent. The general chat thread isn't going to bite, and it's feeling a little lonely now and again.

Re: THE CHATBOX THREAD
Here's a bit of analysis on this wonderful short story that drega posted on the chat. It's called The Scarlet Ibis
- Spoiler:
- [20:37:21] @ Gelatino : doodle appears to represent death
[20:37:36] @ Gelatino : while his brother represents life, and the will to live
[20:37:52] @ Gelatino : for most of the book, the will to live trumps death
[20:37:58] @ Gelatino : just as it does with people
[20:38:17] DicksMcgee : Aw, now I'm sad.
[20:38:30] @ Gelatino : the brother looks out for doodle, but doesn't always have his best interests at heart
[20:38:40] @ Gelatino : like, when he tries teaching him to walk
[20:38:42] tailoredGoose joined the chat on Fri 23 Aug 2013 - 20:38
[20:38:56] @ Gelatino : his apparent reasoning is that he's embarrassed to have a brother who can't walk
[20:39:04] tailoredGoose : omfg nelly
[20:39:13] tailoredGoose : pls dont mention that book
[20:39:20] tailoredGoose : its so sad
[20:39:21] tailoredGoose : ans
[20:39:24] tailoredGoose : and*
[20:39:27] tailoredGoose : ahhhhhhhhhhhhh
[20:39:41] @ Gelatino : considering that the brother represents the will to live, it seems to represent frustration in itself
[20:39:48] @ Gelatino : frustration with death
[20:39:57] @ Gelatino : people don't want to have to deal with the subject of death
[20:40:12] @ Gelatino : they'd rather stay blissfully ignorant and indulged on life
[20:40:38] @ Gelatino : so, the brother's reasoning for teaching doodle to walk is selfish
[20:40:40] @ Gelatino : makes sense
[20:41:09] @ Gelatino : there was a struggle, of course
[20:41:27] @ Gelatino : death (represented by doodle) was very reluctant to give in to life
[20:41:46] @ Gelatino : this says that life itself is a struggle for humans
[20:41:56] @ Gelatino : but the rewards of this struggle are great
[20:42:07] @ Gelatino : doodle did learn to walk eventually
[20:42:25] @ Gelatino : perhaps this represents the "life" imparted to him by his brother
[20:42:46] @ Gelatino : and of course, when you overcome one struggle, who knows what else you can do
[20:43:34] @ Gelatino : now i'm at the part with the ibis
[20:43:59] @ Gelatino : notice how when it dies, it's mentioned that "even death could not mar its beauty."
[20:44:26] @ Gelatino : there is obviously a parallel between doodle and the ibis; the author practically says it outright
[20:44:51] @ Gelatino : doodle is probably aware of this on some level too. he offers to bury the ibis
[20:45:09] @ Gelatino : "Sadly, we all looked at the bird. How many miles had it traveled to die like this, in our yard, beneath the bleeding tree?"
[20:45:16] @ Gelatino : i like this quote
[20:45:38] @ Gelatino : it presents more parallels to doodle
[20:45:46] @ Gelatino : also, something i just thought of
[20:45:54] @ Gelatino : the symbolism of birds here
[20:46:10] @ Gelatino : normally, birds represent freedom, being able to fly wherever they want
[20:46:26] @ Gelatino : perhaps humans, free, are like birds in this regard
[20:46:42] @ Gelatino : but the ibis didn't fly to save itself when it fell from the tree. it went limp.
[20:46:46] Spark Eletran joined the chat on Fri 23 Aug 2013 - 20:46
[20:46:53] @ Gelatino : the ironic inversion of this common symbol is obviously important
[20:47:12] @ Gelatino : there's the parallel between doodle and the ibis
[20:47:28] @ Gelatino : perhaps doodle is like the ibis, limp, weak, unable to defend itself from death
[20:47:40] variegatedDreamraptor : Hate to interrupt this literary analysis (not really), but I like the way you drew Zoroa!Banyu, Misc.
[20:47:47] @ Gelatino : doodle's brother so graciously protects him from death
[20:48:14] @ Gelatino : but in the end, when doodle is separated from his brother very briefly, he dies
[20:48:24] @ Gelatino : and that's when the parallel is drawn between him and the ibis
[20:48:43] @ Gelatino : doodle even has blood streaming from his body
[20:48:56] @ Gelatino : "He had been bleeding from the mouth, and his neck and the front of his shirt were stained a brilliant red."
[20:49:05] @ Gelatino : brilliant red?
[20:49:10] @ Gelatino : that's an interesting phrase
[20:49:35] @ Gelatino : why would you call such a macabre scene "brilliant?"
[20:49:46] @ Gelatino : more parallels to the ibis
[20:50:10] @ Gelatino : the scarlet ibis had bright red plumage, and now doodle is soaked in the same brilliant red
[20:50:43] @ Gelatino : red is a color that obviously represents blood, and probably death as well
[20:50:51] @ Gelatino : but what else does red represent?
[20:51:15] @ Gelatino : the american flag, the french flag, the british flag, lots of national flags have the color red on them
[20:51:28] @ Gelatino : some say that the red on the flag represents war, and the blood of their enemies
[20:51:34] @ Gelatino : war. battle.
[20:51:42] @ Gelatino : perhaps doodle's entire existence was a battle
[20:51:47] @ Gelatino : a battle between life and death
[20:52:01] @ Gelatino : at this one fateful spot, the war was lost
[20:52:27] @ Gelatino : now, to consider the implications of doodle and his brother in this scene
[20:52:40] @ Gelatino : i mentioned that the brother represents life, and doodle represents death
[20:53:05] @ Gelatino : when the two of them are running through the woods, doodle struggles to keep up with his brother
[20:53:12] @ Gelatino : he struggles to keep up with life, in other words
[20:53:19] DicksMcgee has been disconnected on Fri 23 Aug 2013 - 20:53 (session timeout)
[20:53:36] @ Gelatino : the brother is being selfish once again
[20:53:45] @ Gelatino : he runs forward, disregards his brother
[20:54:04] @ Gelatino : he worries only about himself
[20:54:16] @ Gelatino : and for that, his brother dies
[20:54:27] tailoredGoose has been disconnected on Fri 23 Aug 2013 - 20:54 (session timeout)
[20:54:32] variegatedDreamraptor has logged off the chat on Fri 23 Aug 2013 - 20:54
[20:54:45] @ Gelatino : a big part of the brother dies as well, since he dedicated so much of his life towards upbringing doodle
[20:55:41] @ Gelatino : the only thing i'm having trouble inderstanding is the "cruelty" that the brother repeatedly mentions
[20:56:05] @ Gelatino : where does this fit into the metaphor?
[20:56:29] @ Gelatino : i could probably figure it out, but my brain is pretty fried right now
[20:56:38] @ Gelatino : that was a pretty good story, very meaningful
[20:56:45] @ Gelatino : i think it serves as a cautionary tale
[20:56:55] @ Gelatino : no matter how bad things get, don't give up on life
[20:57:01] @ Gelatino : because you might just lose it

Re: THE CHATBOX THREAD
Alright, since I was alone on the chatbox and very Strider-esquely decided to shout words at an audience of none, I convinced myself to copy my ramblings here.
Wow, why is it so much fun to pretend to be Caliborn?
Edit: actually I think I'll just keep this as a random collection of my ramblings when nobody's around. So, uh, welcome to DREGA'S RAMBLINGS WHEN NOBODY'S AROUND.
This is the Fire Emblem boxart.
This is an Oliphaunt.
Huh, it sure is handy how my Mac copies colors and links. I wouldn't try to do all those individually anyways, but it's pretty helpful.

[21:33:14] Dregadude : It sure would be cool if I wasn't the only one living in the Pacific time zone here.
[21:33:37] Dregadude : Especially since I'll definitely be the only one here when it's 11 and I'm feeling lonely in college.

[21:35:58] Dregadude : It's the color of an especially ripe pumpkin sitting in the grove.
[21:36:37] Dregadude : It's the color of a ginger's hair, glowing by warm firelight as he is burned for his soullessness.
[21:38:06] Dregadude : It's the color of a tranquil sunset, that symbol of an end to glorious day, which heralds the darkness and deceit so commonly found under moonlight's icy white glow.
[21:41:07] Dregadude : It's the color of the limbs of a certain lifeless puppet, all four now carelessly akimbo as it rests dolefully in the shadow of an unloved corner, its gaze forever fixed accusingly upon the face of its erstwhile master.
[21:42:55] Dregadude : And although they cannot talk, were they granted the privilege to do so, those red lips plastered upon gray Chinese plastic would surely tremble with suppressed emotion, and say simply,

[19:16:09] Dregadude : ...4!!!!
[19:16:20] Dregadude : i know, so many games

[19:17:14] Dregadude : Maybe that'll be Christmas, I don't know
[19:17:55] Dregadude : Also the cover of Fire Emblem is really silly looking
[19:18:08] Dregadude : Why is everyone flying down with their swords out
[19:18:17] Dregadude : Did they fall out of a plane onto a battlefield
[19:18:25] Dregadude : And why is this asshole not wearing a shirt

[19:21:46] Dregadude : And then the people fall down and die and it's a noble sacrifice
[19:22:07] Dregadude : Holy shit does one of these guys have a bow and arrow
[19:22:24] Dregadude : Is he planning to go all Legolas and shoot an orc in the eye before he lands
[19:23:05] Dregadude : Or maybe he's setting his targets on an Oliphaunt
[19:23:15] Dregadude : Why do the enemies have an Oliphaunt in their ranks
[19:23:36] Dregadude : Maybe this is a distraction
[19:23:40] Dregadude : Sorry, a distaction
[19:23:57] Dregadude : While Marth jumps up and deposits the One Ring into the sun

[22:05:57 28/09/13] Dregadude : I guess Gaia (that fantasy webcomic by the same author/artist) is gaining popularity, and has a lot of ads, but I couldn't read past the first couple pages
[22:06:09 28/09/13] Dregadude : Seemed like the lead-in to a generic Disney movie.
[22:06:18 28/09/13] Dregadude : Actually, that goes for Sandra and Woo as well.
[22:07:03 28/09/13] Dregadude : In response to NN's labeling me as "Espio"
[22:07:35 28/09/13] Dregadude : After a long and arduous Google search, I have concluded that I do not in fact want to have a banana for a nose
[22:13:05 28/09/13] Dregadude : Nor do I wish to be represented by a fandom that produces such monstrosities as this http://www.fanpop.com/clubs/sonic-fan-characters/images/35115989/title/baffle-deity-chaos-photo
[22:14:22 28/09/13] Dregadude : Uh, I guess that's it. G'night everybody.
[22:39:19 28/09/13] Dregadude : Oh, lastly, I just checked out the alpha tees since Spark said they were done.
[22:40:04 28/09/13] Dregadude : After seeing the beta kids (and really digging the John one) I figured I'd wait to see if the Jake shirt would be good, and maybe ask for that for Christmas or something.
[22:40:19 28/09/13] Dregadude : Lord knows I can't spend any money online, why do you think I pirate everything I own?
[22:40:31 28/09/13] Dregadude : (disclaimer: lolz jk)
[22:41:34 28/09/13] Dregadude : Anyways it turns out the Jake shirt is just him waving his tush around like it's a deadly laser cannon
[22:41:39 28/09/13] Dregadude : of hope or something
[22:41:47 28/09/13] Dregadude : And I said NO THANKS
[22:42:08 28/09/13] Dregadude : So I guess I'm not gonna get any of these shirts
[22:42:42 28/09/13] Dregadude : Still thinking I should buy some Homestuck paraphernalia, at least to make friends in college
[22:43:04 28/09/13] Dregadude : But I don't really want to go around with the Heart symbol on my chest, even though that's the aspect I understand the most
[22:43:53 28/09/13] Dregadude : In case it was unclear, while I personally do not discriminate against them, I harbor an intense dislike of even possibly being considered homosexual
[22:44:48 28/09/13] Dregadude : In this day and age there are too many stigmas attached to that
[22:45:25 28/09/13] Dregadude : Not that I wouldn't be heterosexual if gays were more generally accepted
[22:45:35 28/09/13] Dregadude : Wow okay I just derailed myself there pretty badly
[22:45:41 28/09/13] Dregadude : Have fun reading through this shit NN
[22:47:36 28/09/13] Dregadude : The Roxy shirt looks really cool, but I probably would get flagged down for wearing a young teenage girl who totes a martini glass
[22:47:51 28/09/13] Dregadude : Especially since ours is a "dry campus"
[22:49:16 28/09/13] Dregadude : But yeah, bottom line, I really like all the beta shirts and I kinda don't like the alpha ones
[22:49:49 28/09/13] Dregadude : Fuck I guess I'd better put all this in the Chatbox Thread
[22:50:07 28/09/13] Dregadude : I vaguely remember setting up a "dregadude's rambles" post specifically for this
[22:50:18 28/09/13] Dregadude : So if this nonsense is cut off at the top
[22:50:21 28/09/13] Dregadude : Go check there
Huh, it sure is handy how my Mac copies colors and links. I wouldn't try to do all those individually anyways, but it's pretty helpful.

so what you're saying is that what happens when nobody is on the chat is the same thing that happens when no one else is home.

Re: THE CHATBOX THREAD
that was one post
only one post like that since your last post here
and what you just said really dosn't add to the topic at all
or prove your point, or whatever
you've previously made your opinion on people posting their own quotes quite clear
some of us agree, some of us don't, but either way, we know how you feel about it
i'm not sure what exactly your post just now was trying to say or convey
were you just trying to tell NN "that is a bad thing to do and you should feel ashamed for doing it"?
because that's kind of how it seems
i actually do agree that unless we've got a good reason to we should probably try to avoid posting our own quotes
but your post there nonetheless is pretty rude to NN and doesn't contribute anything to any discussion, just sayin'

1) I agree with muffinz, I don't really want to see everyone post their own stuff here but the way you acted Hanky, wasn't nice.
2) Indeed, being a jackass isn't a nice thing to do and unless you want to make people angry it should be avoided.

Anyway, I thought we were all like good friends and such, so I don't see what's a bit of jackassness between friends. Or maybe I'm just quick at calling people friends even though I only know them on the internet...???
Whatever, even if I'm being awfully naive, I see you guys as friends.

No, that's a good point, PD, but I think that crossed the line between good-natured teasing and just being kind of a dick.

the fact that i used "magnum opus" to describe A PUN should have tipped you off to how facetious i was being.
also i posted it here somewhat specifically to irritate HP
