Re: THE BIRTHDAY THREAD~
Spark, we've been meaning to talk to you.
Are you sitting down? You should be sitting down.
You see, you are not here for a birthday celebration. I am afraid this is an intervention.
Your parents didn't know how to tell you this, so here goes...
You are not a Jolteon. You are a human being, and your parents did not find you as a baby Eevee on a doorstep and raise you as their own. They are your biological parents and I am afraid you will never be able to learn Thunderbolt through a TM or through level up. I'm very sorry. If you need support, we are also all human beings* and not Pokemon and we understand how you feel.
*Except maybe kotakun the jury's still out on that one.
Also here you go:

Re: THE BIRTHDAY THREAD~
Oh jeez thanks guys!!! Dwhat that picture is wonderful and amazing and I have a super goofy grin on my face right now! I haven't met any hyped birds, but I will be sure to pat any I come across
I ate no cake on my birthday, because cake is always disappointingly mediocre in 99% of situations! Instead we bought a giant cinnamon Danish and cut it up as if it was a cake. Because why not???
Anyways, guys, I'm sorry I've been borderline nonexistent here for so long, but my frustrating lack of desktop computer internet continues to persist despite my hoping otherwise. Happy late birthday, Sparkler, and I'm sorry for missing your bardpaying! A technician will finally come over on August sixth to make things work again, so nobody have any more birthdays 'till then!

Re: THE BIRTHDAY THREAD~
Gosh, since when have we had : maps : as an icon?? I had no idea! I love the little harmless memes. So cute.
omg are you me??? the only cakes I eat nowadays are my own; baking is now one of my official "skills" and it is specifically because three years ago I got so fed up with shitty birthday cakes (because fewer things are more of downer than hyped expectations followed by the feelings of bitter disappointment and wasted opportunity, and also the taste of shitty cake, on your birthday) that I gave up and learned to make my own through trial and experiment. 'Course I don't do it regularly because I'm really slow at it >:0 but I can safely say my Chocolate Cakes are exactly to my tastes, i.e not too sweet, not too bitter, soft, dense, and a great bite to them (the crumb is actually an adapted brownie recipe and the icing is just truffles) Yummy. You should learn to make your own too! Every problem is an opportunity etc etc etc only this opportunity results in cake.
it's only a wonder I haven't learned to fry my own fries/chips and make my own icecream yet, to be frank, because I'm regularly let down by both of those. (although I did make a sort of icecream a few months ago; icecream flavoured with grilled strawberries and balsamic, for flavour. It was a hit and was also easy and fun.) But we don't have a fryer and there's never any room in our freezer so *shrug*! It might help that my dad is a chef! But it is probably balanced out by the fact that he hated doing it and I have a really annoying eating disorder so ymmv

Re: THE BIRTHDAY THREAD~
//double post, but related because it's about cake and birthdays
So my DARLING AND WONDERFUL AND NOT AT ALL IRRITATING younger sister is returning from her summer in Maryland next week. We missed her 21st birthday because she was (obviously) not there to celebrate it, and I want to make a cake for her. And also she's kind of expecting me to make a cake for her and who am I to disappoint?
The only thing is, I'm a chocolate purist. Chocolate cake, 100% of the time. And she'd prefer a vanilla sponge and I have no experience with, or taste for, vanilla and *ugh* sponges. So I'm googling ideas and bouncing things off the wall until they pique my gastronomique interest. (if you didn't read that word in a phony french accent then ur doin it wrong)
So I'd appreciate ideas guys really just bouncing ideas off the wall here. I was thinking this recipe for the crumb (i.e, the cake part of the cake) because it looks tasty and fluffy and moist http://bakingbites.com/2014/05/vanilla-hot-milk-sponge-cake/
with a different vanilla buttercream frosting, and then a strawberry coulis on the side. (I could put it IN the cake, or even jam instead, but I dislike fruit in cakes so might as well make it separate.)
I could put regular whipped cream on the inside layer, but idk, it always seems too squishy and moist whenever my dad does it. I'll definitely serve it with cream anyway because my sister hates cream but weirdly wants it with this cake :?
Other ideas I was thinking of was using Raspberry instead of Strawberry for the coulis, I don't have a preference, so I don't know what would work better with the other flavours. I could grate some orange rind into the cake for some orange flavour, for some reason I feel this would work, but it's probably silly. I was also VERY STRONGLY CONSIDERING using a browned butter icing instead of a vanilla, er, vanilla icing. Browned butter is fun to make and has a crazy, nutty, caramelly flavour despite being just butter that's got heated. Maybe I'll go half-and-half?
And I was thinking I'd put some sprinkles in the cake batter as a surprise for when the otherwise white and boring cake is cut. If I can find vegetarian sprinkles, that is! I think this idea is called Funfetti Cake in the States?

Re: THE BIRTHDAY THREAD~
If they're the same as buskers in Hiberno-English, then a busker is someone who performs (usually music) on city streets to earn money. My sister's done it sometimes during tourist season since she's top sox at Irish trade and American expats love that stuff.
