Or maybe it's a Zorua pretending to be an Oshawott.
Eitherway, glad to have you back.

Updoot. WOW this is a big painting. And relevant because there are pokemon in it, just not in this section.
Guys, I have a question. The large rectangular rock in the background. Would you consider it to be definitely-a-kind-of-blue, or definitely-a-kind-of-green? Monitor differences.

Re: General Pokemon Art Thread: Where free time goes to die
"Or something" unfortunately comes under the green category...it's not really green but it is in comparison to what I think it should be. It should be DEFINITELY and UNMISTAKEABLY shades of blue. I think my monitor adds yellow to everything, but I can't be sure - so I THINK what I'm working on and what I want it to look like looks more like this on my monitor:

That second picture is definatly a blue, and even the fire is more orange than yellow. The first picture is definatly more yellow for some reason.

Rrrrrround TWO: progress is definitely a thing that is happening.
Colours may be and almost certainly are incorrect. I have to guess the editing I do on Photoshop; not least because PS displays the colours differently too! There are simply too many colors and vaules. Should be strongly but not obnoxiously coloured with a single blur hue opposing a range from red to yellow. Think superman.

Note: am I right in saying that except for the sky, which is very blue, probably too blue, the background to the sides is largely browny-blue?

The backgrounds in the sides is actually really blue as well. I'd recommend making the cliff face gray or subtly brown as a median between the blue sky and red fire. Plus it would make sense if the foreground and the cliffs are similar browns.

Re: General Pokemon Art Thread: Where free time goes to die
Haha oh wow I had no idea this comment was here. That's what cones of not paying attention to page numbers and also being a page topper.
All in all, I'm kinda glad you say it's blue? Though I'm not sure which screen to trust. I think over Christmas I'll commandeer my sister's or my friend's laptop and try to get a multi-screen setup going. The fact everything looks different depending where I view it is absurdly annoying.
Basically, the background IS blue. The objects in front of it on it then should mostly be in the warmer hues, getting steadily warmer as they move outwards, as well as being based on the multiple orange light sources and the sheer artistic license of trying to highlight the action. The ambient light (sky) is blue and it's mostly dark without the lighting, (think moonless twilight) but tinted blue for contrast and yeah, again artistic license. I did a lot of that in this one. A lot a lot... Colours weren't even the big thing there. The ground itself is only brown because the light (orange) is bouncing of the otherwise blue stone, that's why it gets bluer the further you move away from the action, and it's also why I'm so desperate to get the colours right because it takes a bit of balancing before it looks appropriate. Orange and blue cancel each other out which is both a good thing and the worst thing ever, depending where I do it. If I let the stones (blue) bleach then it ruins the entire scheme.
Also if the stones were grey instead of blue they'd be orange. If you see what I mean. So the light itself shouldn't spread too far - that's artistic license again. I've managed to set a scattering radius on all the major light sources. It's why there's no distinct shadows, too.

Re: General Pokemon Art Thread: Where free time goes to die
I'd almost recommend making all the rock grey-brown in that case, since ordinary rock doesn't refract orange light/lava, it just gets brighter along a brown color scale, if that made any sense. It seems like making the rock itself blue is overcomplicating things; from my perspective, it would make the picture more easily understood if the cliffs were a distinct color from the sky, even if both the sky and the cliffs were so muted that it doesn't seem to make a difference anyways. Right now it takes a bit of staring to differentiate between stone and sky.
But to reiterate I love your work, it's beautiful already and I won't even object if you tell me to stuff it.
I might try to hide a quiet sob, though.

Re: General Pokemon Art Thread: Where free time goes to die
i drew my raichu
Nasty Plot~
actually, i never really liked raichu much until that one i got for my WT run.
did this because my tablet’s driver is kaput, and this is an attempt at using SAI decently without pen pressure. ust something simple to get used to manually doing line weights and whatnot.

Wow that shading reminds me Sooooo much of the raichu thing I did years ago, I didn't use black lines but the colouring is hella similar. Art style overall is very different though.

ew god, look how badly that compressed.
when an image's outlines have varying thicknesses-usually to make the picture more dynamic.
this is an extremely unprofessional definition
line weights are my favorite thing to play around with in art, but you can't really do them digitally without pressure sensitivity.
p.s. art belongs to Squeedgemonster, my art idol <3
