Re: Hanky's Record Shop
man, yeah, that is a Quality Song.
i've stayed out of this thread so far because i don't really listen to any music outside of video game music, usually... but if that can count too, than sure!
i don't have a favorite video game soundtrack, but one series i've been listening to the songs from a lot lately is the Bayonetta games! they've got some really good songs in them, but i love that there's also a ton of variety, and i think one good way to illustrate that is the battle themes!
like, you've got your regular battles against regular enemies, which use songs like these:
then later you've got the tougher enemies and mini-bosses and such, which drop the lyrics and usually focus on being a bit more dramatic:
THEN there's the major boss battles, which go all out into being cinematic and epic (i hate that word's overuse but it applies here):
...i feel like i put too many videos in this post. but jeez, i found it hard to not put even more than this. there's loads of songs in these games and they're all good. i don't know if anyone else on this quarantine has played these games, so consider this a recommendation to go listen to more of these songs.

Re: Hanky's Record Shop
Huh. weird, tbh
I LOVE the first type of songs, but... It feels weird to have them be the normal enemy fight theme. I mean, yeah, it feels empowering... but that's exactly what I mean!
An energetic theme should totally be the normal fight music, but I feel like lyrics are usually something special in a game - whenever I think of "oh some of this game's music has lyrics", it immediately jumps to the BIG moments, the coolest sequences.
Basically, I'd imagine it goes
Energetic and pumping - normal enemy stuff
Dramatic and cool - Tougher enemies
Ominous and epic - Bosses
Full-out lyrical badass - That one moment in the end when you are The Best
Which, btw - unrelated to the topic but that's something I absolutely love in videogames. I enjoy a challenge leading up to it, ofc, but empowering final sequences are the BEST thing. See Wonderful 101, as the first example that comes to mind.
It just feels so... satisfying. Especially when it happens to both sides - like, the villain goes crazy strong and wipes the floor with you, but then near the end you just come back with a vengeance and the theme kicks in. Aaaa I love it

Re: Hanky's Record Shop
hm... yeah, no, I get that point. it does kinda make sense for lyrics to be reserved more for Big Moments, but I guess they do sort of do that... kinda? like, in bayo2, Tomorrow is Mine gets used throughout the game for normal battles, but Moon River is saved for the more iconic, defining moments, like the battles in the (super cool) prologue chapter, and it also plays during the part where the final boss is severely weakened and you get to beat the shit out of them and then finish them off with a hilarious little minigame
so there's that i guess?
also, the regular battle theme in each game (Tomorrow is Mine in 2 and Theme of Bayonetta in 1) also serves as like, the main theme of the game? so i guess that's the justification there. i guess the situation is less "they put lyrics in the regular battle songs" and more "they made lyrical theme songs for the games then used them as the regular battle songs". which is still kinda odd, i guess.

Re: Hanky's Record Shop
coming up on 8,000 songs and almost 850 artists in my music library on google play, and that's only the stuff that i've actually purchased. not to mention music that i can't (won't) download because i haven't paid for it. like undertale ost and stuff.
unfortunately, iT, your link won't work as an embedded video because record labels are fuck sticks.

Re: Hanky's Record Shop
attn: wario games have really really good soundtracks oh my god
i mean i've played and loved these games already but i never really bothered to listen through the whole soundtracks to them, and WOW they're good
- Spoiler:
i just gotta start with this one, which is probably the most popular recurring song in the wario land games. i find it to be really... iconic? for lack of a better term, and it feels like a very "Wario" song, like it matches his character real well
there are a ton of different songs in this series with different styles to them but they all feel cohesive. like, you wouldn't associate wario with a soft, airy, nature-y sounding song, but listening to this, it still feels like part of the same game. anyways this song is really beautiful and so are the two levels it plays in.
let's go to a different game. wario world isn't officially a wario land game but it's pretty close, and this is probably the best song from the game i think. pecan sands is the last and hardest (by far) regular level in the game and this song emphasizes that well. it sounds so much more intense and serious than all the previous level themes while still fitting the game's mood, and its very long loop fits the very long, partially non-linear level well.
the sound quality in wario land 4 is a little on the mediocre side thanks to being a GBA game, but it's still got a great soundtrack. this song has a sorta long buildup but it's very catchy, funky, and spooky, which are all great adjectives.
wl4 introduced a concept that got revisited in shake it, where at the end of every normal level, a countdown timer starts and you have to find your way back to the level's entrance as fast as you can. this song plays during those sequences! it sets the frantic mood perfectly and the many different segments to the song are perfect for building tension. it starts out with a loud, creepy series of sound effects to get you into that "holy shit i need to get out now" mood, then gains a beat and becomes a bit quieter and more melodic as it starts building up, then after over one and a half minutes the song's intro ends and the main loop begins, where the same 30-40 hectic seconds of music repeat over and over, reinforcing how you're running out of time and need to rush as quickly as you can. in the last few seconds, a clock starts ticking and gets louder and louder, then when you run out of time the music halts completely to be replaced by only a gut-wrenching, eerily "off" beeping that plays as your health rapidly drains away. then you die and get kicked out of the level! the sound design in this song is all just so perfect for the situation and i love it.
i didn't want to put more than five videos in one post again so i'm gonna link a few other recommendations:
bamboozle village (shake it)
gurgle gulch (shake it)
wndbreak bay (shake it)
beanstalk way (world)
the mean emcee (world)
toy block tower (wl4)
toxic landfill (wl4)
i mean i've played and loved these games already but i never really bothered to listen through the whole soundtracks to them, and WOW they're good

Digging that Ray LaMontagne. I didn't know he existed until about a year ago but I've liked everything I've ever heard him sing so far.
