Xaber plays Pokemon Vega (save lost. game over)
Pokemon Vega is a Japanese hackrom of FireRed featuring a new region, Fakemon, new moves and a new plot. Playthroughs of this game usually contain phrases such as "soul-crushing difficulty", "why would anybody think this a good idea" and "clawed my own eyes out in frustration."
I thought I'd give it a go. So fully equipped with a translation patch and walkthrough from the great DoesntKnowHowToPlay of the Nuzlocke Forums, I entered...
Hell.
There'll be more gameplay next update. I just wanted to get this started. Also: I am not joking when I talk about Hell. You'll see soon enough.
Is this the right place to put a screenshot run? I wasn't sure.

Hell.
- Part One:
The game starts off like most Pokemon games. A smiling professor appears to you in your dreams. But his words are nonsensical, twisted, evil. His upturned mouth is merely a facade.
A facade made of dead puppies.
He presents a mildly cute Ice-type to lure us into complacency.
But I know the evil behind those red, rosy ribbons.
He asks my name and gender. I answer warily.
When he asks the name of another boy, I attempt to test him by using an overused joke. He says nothing. Is this boy another monster? Or, perhaps, a possible ally?
He shouts out my name. Clearly, the time has come.
I find myself in my room. The air is heavy with anticipation. What will I find after I walk down those stairs?
On my desk I find a Potion. I grab it and place it in my bag.
There is no sense in delaying. I cannot stay in this room forever.
Coming down the stairs, my mother gives me a Town Map and a pair of Running SHoes. Her words provide no clue as to their identity; I discern their function by myself.
Opening the map, I find a strange world. It seems this is the place I must escape, or be condemned to eternal torment.
Stepping outside, the freezing wind and snow tear at me. But I do not relent.
Someone calls out my name. I tense.
The professor from my dream appears and leads me onwards through the snow.
I find two others already in the lab. The boy from earlier, and a behatted man whom we shall refer to as Snickers.
Why? I'm not sure.
The professor makes a gift of a Pokedex to me. Perhaps to the other two also. I cannot be certain.
Snickers leaves. The professor addresses DUCKS and I.
It appears I am allowed to choose an ally from the three available.
My choices:
A leaf monkey.
Some form of sentient sludge.
A floating orb of magma.
I make my choice. (Note: I am choosing the water starter. No argument. There's a very good reason for this.)
My ally's name? Dean.
As I leave, I am challenged.
Dean makes short work of DUCKS's monkey.
And so I walk onto the dread darkness of a new journey.
There'll be more gameplay next update. I just wanted to get this started. Also: I am not joking when I talk about Hell. You'll see soon enough.

I think it's supposedly belongs to the Artsy Corner, but I don't think any of us gonna have trouble with this being here. But maybe Gela or HP can move it?
Anyway, good luck. I will read along.

UPDATE POWERS GOGOGO
- Part Two:
Leaving Hazuki Town behind, we find this winter wonderland.
There's a house here. A nice lady decides to give me some Pokeballs.
Encounters here are:
Taillow, an Ice-type Fakemon, Pineco, and Togepi. We catch one of each.
Meet Gaff, Cream, Tally and Dab.
Grinding a bit gives these results.
There are also a few trainers around; they're not very challenging.
Poison Point is the most threatening thing they can do most of the time.
Some new moves are learnt, including...
THE POWER. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAA.
On the next route, this guy gives you the HM for Flash. Not particularly useful. Meanwhile...
AAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!
(i have no idea what half of these moves actually do, btw)
Also, Gaff learnt this instead of Wing Attack. Glide is a 50BP Flying move that raises Accuracy sometimes (not sure on the chance).
There are Riolu here. I caught one and named it Jakul.
Here we are at the next city. That wasn't a very taxing journey, was it? All my blithering about Hell and dead puppies and everything certainly seems misplaced.
Maybe.
Before you judge me, though, look at this screenshot.
This is the kind of wild you have to grind on for the gym. It couldn't be that hard, could it?
Pineco@Oran Berry Lv13: Signal Beam, Double Spin, Spikes, SelfDestruct
Bug/Rock Fakemon@Oran Berry Lv14: Rollout, Rock Throw, Steamroller, Defense Curl
Shuckle@Sitrus Berry Lv15: Curse, Rock Tomb, Bulldoze, Big Yawn
Double Spin is a Normal move that has 50BP, 90 Accuracy, and hits twice.
Big Yawn is exactly the same as Spore.
Have fun against SHUCKLE WITH SPORE, kids
YEP, NO GODDAMN TROUBLE WHATSOEVER.
Maybe there's a pokemon available that completely destroys this gym, at the very least? To make it easier for the player?
Available: Starter, Taillow, Ice-type fakemon, Togepi, Riolu, Pineco (+ 1 ground-type rhino w/ intimidate from a trade for a Togepi)
YEAH NO.
How many of those can have an SE move against a Shuckle? One. The starter. I picked the water starter for a very good reason. Even with the water starter, though, this gym is brutal.
I'm going to go grind now.

Re: Xaber plays Pokemon Vega (save lost. game over)
- progress is fun!:
So... you know how I was ranting about that Shuckle last time?
Well, I beat it. However, the screenshots went to a better place.
You'll have to do with just words.
The Pineco and the fakemon went down fairly easily from SE attacks. (I'll show you what the fakemon looks like later on this update.) The Shuckle was a bit tougher, but I benefited from the fact that my rom is slightly different to the one I quoted. Instead of Rock Tomb and Bulldoze, the creature actually knew Ancientpower and Wrap. This meant that, once Dab (Togepi) charmed it a few times, it could actually do very little, and stalling it out of Ancientpower PP was very easy. Wrap was so weak as to be useless, and I just wore it down with Dean (starter) and Gaff (Taillow). Eventually, it fell.
That makes it sound easier than it was. I had to grind at 400% speed for about an hour to get to the point where I could beat it.
Also, Dean evolved.
After I defeated the gym, I went to a cave. I lost most of the screenshots for that, as well. Imagine a short route with trainers that have lvl 7-9 mons, and wild Houndour and Nidoran, neither of which I am currently using. Then a cave.
DUCKS (rival) and some Team Bad People grunts were in the cave. (the team name is D.H. or something. it might have some significance in Japan?)
The puzzle in the cave, involving craters that make you teleport, either glitched or was so difficult as to be above the reach of mere mortals like myself. So I pulled out AdvanceMap and struggled with Japanese map names for about twenty minutes.
TAKE THAT, PHYSICS! YOU AIN'T GOT NOTHING ON THIS!
DUCKS and I then beat up some Team Bad Guys grunts. I already steamrolled a few of them earlier. Their levels are so low after that gym, it's embarrassing.
Here's their outfit, if you were wondering.
Here are the available mons. Diglett is... well, Diglett; the pillbug is only notable for being the bug/rock from the gym; and the rhino is a ground type that can have Intimidate (extremely useful for the next gym) and Lightningrod.
I caught one of each. Probably only going to use Greta (who has Intimidate, and whom I almost named Hank before noticing the gender).
Outside the cave, there's an ambush, which could be nasty if the trainer didn't have two level sevens.
Vega's level curve is batshit insane, I have to say.
Next up we have Route 504, with fun and accessible ledges!
Snickers appears and confronts a Team Bad Guy member.
Then they start running round and round this sign, Benny Hill style. I am not kidding about this part.
They run off through here. The point of this scene appears to be showing the protgaonist that, contrary to appearances, there is a passage through here.
TAKE THAT AGAIN PHYSICS! BOOYEAH!
There's also a fairly nasty trainer gauntlet here, notable mainly for the fact that there are about ten trainers in a row and for some stupid reason I decided not to go back to heal.
I'm just going to quote Karkat here,
PAST ME IS THE DUMBEST BUCKET OF FESTERING DISCHARGE I EVER FELL ASS BACKWARDS INTO.
Not really, but it was kinda stupid.
The best part about the trainer gauntlet is that at the end of it, you get to see a... wait for it... a sign! Nothing else! Just a sign!
Bitter? Me?
It took me a while to figure out that there's another passage under it.
I've got some more screenshots up to the next gym (which is also complete bs, I must say) but it's getting late. Goodnight.

Yeah, I'd like to see that.
This is cool, it's much more well-done than most of the other hackroms I've seen.

I hope Rollo dies. Especially if he's named after a certain someone's younger brother.

that fact is irrelevant. I still hope Rollo dies.
if you're confused, it has something to do with Code Geass.

Re: Xaber plays Pokemon Vega (save lost. game over)
I do not know where the nicknames came from. It was late, I was tired. Rollo has meanwhile been condemned to the closest thing to death; permanent boxhood.
Given I have school for the next five days, I may not be able to update until Friday. We'll see.
- flash mazes and gyms:
After escaping the Land of Strange Passages and Trainer Gauntlets, we enter Route 505...
...which contains more trainers, and a picture of the newly-evolved Dean.
We eventually come across the next city.
I really should have gone back to heal at some point.
I switch out Yolo for Greta, since Greta's going to come in handy for the next gym, whereas Yolo is just kinda useless.
Notably, this woman gives a Leech Seed TM, which has some nice users (such as Forretress).
DUCKS is here, in front of a building.
He only has two Pokemon, but they're quite high leveled. (I used Water Gun because he switched.)
The Grass starter was quite difficult to take down; it eventually took a Guts boost on Gaff from the Nidoran's Poison Point to take it down.
After the battle, DUCKS gives us an exp share.
Venturing back into route 505, we find Pichu and a Normal/Flying bird that evolves into a Psychic/Flying type.
I caught one of each; Pichu for the 3rd gym (water type) and its fantastic evolution (my avatar), and the bird as a Flash slave.
The building my rival was standing in front of just happens to be the Ruined Mansion, aka Flash Maze. The strangest part is that you have old ladies running around in this pitch-black place. I don't know why.
HM powers activate!
Wilds in the cave. The magician douchebag is an annoying Poison-type that's not very useful and turns up freakin' everywhere; the horse is a fairly decent Psychic type that is always watching you; the wisp is mostly notable for having Flame Body (so very, very useful); and the other thing is an extremely rare Psychic/Ghost type.
I caught a horse and a Flame Body wisp.
Anyway, grinding time!
Greta learnt Dig and Spikes.
Wisp learnt Night Shade.
Here's the team. I honestly should have grinded more (I get very lucky at the gym) but it worked.
To make up for this, I spend half my money on potions.
The gym puzzle involves talking to Digletts until they leave. I don't understand the mechanics of this; I just wandered around for a bit until I got this one to leave.
GYM CHALLENGE!!!
He leads with a Rhyhorn. Water Gun OHKO. Easy enough. This is the weakest member of his team.
Next up, a Hitmonchan. This thing has perfect coverage and some powerful moves. I switched in Jakul because I wasn't sure what he was sending in after Rhyhorn.
Jakul goes down, and I switch in Greta for Intimidate abuse.
I then switch in Wisp and get extremely lucky with a burn from Flame Body. See that 19 damage? That was a resisted, -1 Fire Punch. Without that burn this thing would be a lot harder to handle.
From there I just stall it with Intimidate and burn.
And it goes down.
Now, my plan for this Dugtrio was simple: send in Tally, tank a hit, and Selfdestruct. (The damage there is from Spikes).
The "tank a hit" part goes fairly well (it used Rock Slide), but Tally flinched. No selfdestruct nonsense for him.
So it was up to Dean. Luckily, he'd learnt Confuse Ray upon evolution. Continuous stalling with that and potions (I used several of the 40 I bought) eventually brought it down.
Like so.
Victory!
Also, aftermath. Like I said, I was a little undergrinded here. Probably something to watch out for next time.
Given I have school for the next five days, I may not be able to update until Friday. We'll see.
