Off is a really really good game made by a french guy called mortis ghost.
You're the batter and you go around beating the shit out of ghosts.
It's pretty awesome.
Also there's a lot of philosophy, plot, and nightmare fuel (direct and fridge) to it, so I definitely recommend it.

Kuluk used to live in a house where he was created. He was told that al there is to life is spookiness, and he was never told about anything but of scariness and spooks. But he faked understanding, believing there was much more to life than scariness. When his creators sent him to the real world with a demon-like companion, they waved goodbye to him, thinking he was trained to terrorize the small town. He proceeded down to the town square, euphoria filling his small cat mind, because he was right. There was happiness. And it was called Christmas. But Kuluk did not know this yet. So to express his joy, he sung a song…

There’s color everywhere

characters don't have to be from stories. they often just exist in your mind with only their own details surrounding them.

surely, as a veteran of Spore, you understand this.

nah man my adventures were the shit

tomba was such a brave soldier, his death represented the inevitability of an end to everything good and bad alike; in other words, cosmic irony

but yeah, you're probably right. characters can just come from nowhere, but i think it's unhealthy to expend too much effort on fleshing out characters that don't serve a specific purpose (note that this is not meant as a jab at anybody in particular, just a general statement)
