At least CC's been around, if sporadically. I don't think we've heard from cloudNinja since before we even made this forum.

You know what is a cool country to live in.
The Netherlands. Deutsch people are cool

And Scotland. Because scenery. And feels.

Anyway, now for something completely different.:

Why does that feel so right yet look so wrong?

Le sigh :/ just makes me imagine a homestuck pokemon version, which makes me think of me having pokemon in homestuck. Which makes me think of me having my own adventure and that won't happen because I can't draw fast enough Sad took me 3 hours to do half a swan.

a plumb bob is held straight down at 35 degrees latitude

how do i know what angle it deviates from a perfect radius

What is a perfect radius

Which one is a latitude
And
How do i math?

radius means a radius of the earth, assuming it's a perfect sphere

latitude is the distance from the equator, the equator being 0 degrees, so 35 degrees latitude is 35 degrees above the equator

I'm doing physics problems involving moving reference frames, and i know there are people older than me here so i just thought someone might have an idea?

my problem is that since the earth is rotating at a constant speed and the only forces are acting in the radial direction, it makes no sense that the thing should be deflected at any angle, but apparently it is anyway? i mean, i don't think there's any tangential acceleration, but when i draw my free body diagram, the only forces are tension and gravity, pointing in opposite directions, so i'm kind of stuck

centripedal acceleration is to the axis
gravity is to the center
the center is on the axis but the axis is not the center

OH I get it I wish I could draw a picture Sad except I don't know how you combine different forces mathswise. But yeah. If you were to plot the rotation, without the force of gravity, along the axis of an infinitely (inwards) long piece of string, or line, the shape it creates would not be a cone, it would be a cylinder. WELL assuming you moved up and down along the axis whilst letting it spin otherwise it'd be a disc spinning around the axis being 90° perpendicular to it.
Then turn off the earths spin and gravity makes the plumbob fall from the sky and point not in the opposite direction, but towards the earths center. And you know what latitude it is so you can get that angle.

Umm I am uneducated with maths and am bad at it anyway besides possibly theory but in my head, a simple diagram of the opposing forces from the point you're holding the string is forming in my head, it's r shaped, where the top part is completely horizontal, the angle is obtuse and is the one that you get using 35°? I don't know how you do that. And I don't know how you get the strengths of those forces. OE what you do afterwards. Hell I've probably got this all wrong.

I can do recursion though!! Anyone wanna discuss recursion?

Before we can discuss recursion, we must first discuss recursion.

There once was a thing called rotation
Whose uses - you couldn't debate 'em
In physics they went,
Straight lines got all bent -
Then Kotakun supplied demonstration!

Ehhh 4/10 for poor rhyming and also spoofing the physics, 10/10 for effort though right?

Somebody do recursion and make it funny using recursion Very Happy

Especially when you try to work in recursion. I'm sure it's possible, but it would almost certainly take you days at the very least to complete.

I've only now realized that two threads got closed because they reached 50 pages. I was wondering why the General Chat got so short suddenly.
